About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Dark Blue Twin Set (Jacket)

The both of this set's items were made without any break, one after one. But during last, already few weeks, at first I couldn't get any decent photo of the jacket (it's not nice enough outside to take pictures and indoors photos are still not good) then couldn't find time to make the post (it's the end of term... you know). As with postponing the report about the sewing the interest to it is disappearing, I thought all the shortcomings of the post can be compensated with the story... if only I find anything interesting to tell :-)

So, as it was mentioned in the previous post about the top, the most outstanding feature of this set is that I could cut it of 1.80 x  150 cm of knits. Because of that, I have a centre back seam.  The pattern of the jacket was chosen as soon as I saw the one #110 in Burda 11/2018. Any wrap model, either a blouse or dress or jacket is doomed to be sewed one day because they are my all time favourites :-)

I invented nothing in the sewing but as my jersey is pretty thick, there was some trouble with the processing of the right front. There are few shares of the fabric there so the thickness of the edge with the pleats, belt and the facing was quite remarkable. It was solved with as much cutting the seams allowance as possible after stitching and steaming.

The outfits like this one, together with my new favourite skirt, I am ready to wear from morning till night :-) Especially with this jewellery. If I had no tailor's ego, I would wear this ensemble all the time: very comfortable, nice and warm, what is very important in winter here, clothes. I am very glad about the result indeed!

I yet had some story and very unexpected:-) During one of the tries to take a photo of the jacket my cousin offered to have lunch at the restaurant Tsypa (it's something like a nickname for a chicken) that attracted her with the names of the dishes. While reading the menu, I saw the address of the brewery from where they get their beer. It turned out to be village Kvacy in Transcarpathia. In a minute I was astounded with the thought that I was on that brewery during my Carpathian vacation last year but until seeing the address, I had no associations with the place despite "Tsypa" is their trademark and an absolutely unusual name for a beer; next day after visiting the brewery we climbed Hoverla (the highest mountain of Ukraine) and celebrated the event with one of Tsypa's beers. The lunch surely became twice tastier from that moment - wonderful memories always improve appetite:-)

Dark Blue Twin Set (Top)

Last Saturday was the day of not-happened things - no walk, no eating out, no socializing with some friend. Entire dullness and greyness of the weather (I do need at least a little sun!)... Once I told that such days end in the same way for me - with much hope, in the beginning, to have enough rest, the weekend is over with much regretting about wasted time. So it was good I had a cut twin set on my table to start and finish the work in two days. So the time was devoted to sewing the match for my nice tartan skirt.

The most outstanding feature of this top is that I could cut the twin set of 1.80 m x 150 cm of the fabric :-) The pattern of the top itself is #130 from an old issue Burda 11/2004, I like it slight fitting and short either sleeves or wings. I used to sew a skirt 122 from that issue, actually I still have it and maybe it will match the top as well.

The jewellery was made especially for this outfit.

The top was being made pretty quickly. A tiny tip as for the collar. As it is cut as a stripe of a fabric, it is worth steaming it to get the curve shape before stitching the short ends for the best fitting around the neck.

To process the armholes I just bend twice and stitched the seam allowance along them.

Pinch Beads November Necklace

As it was mentioned in the previous post, the first item in this new set, named after November, was made a necklace. And, while chewing upon, it had to look in a different way... For example, the rivolis were supposed to be yellow, the pinch beads - blue and the pendant had to look much more similar Del Rio Trio pattern by Leslie Frazier from Beadwork, June/July 2012. But, at first, I collected the materials quite long as to buy pinch beads is pretty troublesome: they offer not much diversity of the colours here. Then I couldn't find the necessary sizes of rivolis of the same palette, actually, what I finally bought is 16 and 14 mm rivolis of the same colour and 12 mm rivoli is lighter (despite it was labelled as the same) so I could have chosen the three different including yellow at once as well :-) And the pendant from the magazine transferred into only a source of inspiration...

Right after the work started it turned out I had to invent the pendant's pattern almost entirely because instead of 6 mm fire polished beads I took 6x4 mm rondelles. So I bezelled the rivolis in this way.

As the start went differently from the magazine's pattern the next steps became some kind of improvisation and experimenting, that's why I don't have detailed photos of the process - I didn't keep in mind taking them on time - only final outcome of every step.

Beaded beads were made by the magazine pattern, I only added a row of 10/0 seed beads.

I've got a picturesque set and I am very glad that the work with pinch beads wasn't disappointing. I hope it will match the outfit it meant to even despite its other colour style:-)

Pinch Beads November Earrings

The cold week, completed with this Saturday snowy morning, made forget about all autumn beauties quite quickly, yet we are in November now at its best :-) The project I share today is not the wish to prolong the feeling of that special autumn splendor and mood... it just happened that I had a chance to finish it right today in the morning after two weeks of searching the free time to work on it.

At first I made the necklace with pinch beads but for the bezeling the rivolis with them for the pendant and for the earrings different techniques were used. For the earrings' rivoli I started with stringing 1 pinch (12 mm rivoli - 6 pinches, 14 mm - 7 pinches), 1 10/0 and locked them into the ring. Then added two rows of five 10/0 seed beads loops. And then pulled the loops around the rivoli. Then added loops of four seed beads around every pinch.

Next step is to join the elements. After few experiments, I made it with seed beads and 3 mm bicones. In this way the thread must go through the beads criss-cross (dark lines on the photo) otherwise the low element will turn round. I liked that the joining is not absolutely stiff and the smaller element has dangle's effect.

All about the necklace is here.

Plaid November Skirt

The skirt is named November and it sounds as if I make one every month... not a bad idea, though... :-) I was not going to write about anything here... Then I thought I had made nothing special devoted to autumn mood this year and yet this project deserves a short backstory because I sewed the skirt with pleasure and hope to enjoy wearing it as well.

Last year I saw this plaid fabric in the store, it surely appealed to me - I love plaid fabrics - but didn't buy it then. The warm honey hue of the yellow doesn't suit my pale face so I touched the fabric, wrinkled, smoothed it and passed by. During my this year autumn shopping jaunt I saw the fabric again and this time yielded the temptation :-) I decided to sew a skirt and thus between my face and the fabric there would be something more appropriate. When I wore the ready skirt, I liked the fabric even more... I thought it reminds this year autumn: mild, warm, with many sunny days, with yellowing leaves that are falling so slowly... as if the nature is not in hurry and gives us the advice to follow its mode...

The pattern #108 from Burda 10/2017. The issue that never makes me doubt if I've spent money properly :-) I sewed four models from it and am planning few more.

I paired the skirt with a sweater, old but nice. The patten is on the Ravelry.

Ravelry.

As my skirt is of plaid fabric, I had to make some modifications. It concerned the yokes because its plaids had to match with the main part's of the skirt. So I removed the relief of the yoke closer to the centre according to the fold and made the seam on the centre of the front.

Then the work goes in usual way. For the back any re-drafting is not necessary but the plaid must be matched anyway.

For this kind skirt a usual zipper seemed to be used better because it is easier to match the plaids.

I also lined only yoke. As always added loops in the side seams to hang the skirt.

When sewing the lining to the cross seam it needs some overlap. To know exactly how much it needed, it's good to put the skirt with the wrong side right and pin the lining to the yoke.

Magic Fine Fitted Sweater

October turns out to be knitting & crocheting month. It is the fact mentioned only because all my this month's posts are connected with these kinds of handmade work. I hope to start the project that promises to be something new for me by its technique and I think it would be quite troubling so, to clear the consciousness at least a little, I decided to finish some of my UFOs (unfinished objects) :-). I have just few of them: one cross-stitched picture, one embroidered with seed beads, one set of jewellery and three days ago among them I also had this sweater with only-ribs-knitted-sleeves. When speaking about finishing the UFOs, I actually meant this very item. Firstly, the knitting was started in February and most of work was already done and, secondly, I just need a sweater.
I cannot say I am very happy with the outcome but I am absolutely satisfied with the fact that the sweater is ready:-) Besides, as the yarn was bought on sale, not having on mind my work, it cost a little more than three dollars and from this point of view the result is perfect :-)
I decorated the outfit with the Sunflower pin, crocheted several years ago, and it added to the sweater some cheerful effect and consoled me a little :-)

Magic Fine"

The yarn is Magic Fine from YarnArt. This colour style I liked best of all and, as soon as saw it, bought without thinking. But it turned out to be much more interesting in the skein than in the clothes. The main colour is so dark that looks grey, probably, it IS grey... But I wouldn't make a sweater of the yarn of this hue of grey, I don't like it. Then I bought two kinds of this yarn and the colour style of that "Berry" pullover I consider to be much better. As I already have the experience, I can say that the yarn is peeling pretty much from the first days of wearing.
So in the clothes this hue looks plain and it didn't correspond my expectation.

Instead of the rich pattern's collar I just cast on from the neck hole and purled two rows, then knitted about two cm of  2x2 cm ribs and the decreased every two purls for one, then knitted two more cm and cast off with a hook to have more stretching edge.

The pattern was taken from a Japanese magazine. Despite I had the right gauge and size I knitted all the details longer for about 6-7 cm. From my previous experience I remember that their patterns are for a teenager type of women and I am not the one. After steaming and sewing the sweater looked nice... I wish it looks on me in the same way... But then I had to knit it probably three sizes bigger and have no curves and I am not sure I would have exactly what I wanted as well :-)

Fairisle Scarf, or Travelling Arrows II

It took me just two weeks to make it and I do like the outcome. And it happened earlier than I made few more trips around my country:-) So the travelling project from this post transformed into the finished one and today's post devoted to it will be without any stories: I just share my new achievement :-) Despite I had to refuse from the idea of making the cowl and got the scarf it is just fabulous :-)

After the second repeating I already remembered the pattern and the work went quicker. After the forth repeating the pattern the length of the piece was enough to lock it in a cowl of one turn around my neck.  I hesitated. I thought that this cowl is too warm to wear it only as a nice accessory as it won't cover the neckhole of the coat. Besides, I would have some remnants of the yarn again. On the other hand, there was not enough yarn left to make four more repeats of the pattern for turning the cowl twice around the neck. So I decided to knit as long piece as possible for the amount of the yarn and then make a scarf.

To finish the scarf I joined the every end of it flatly, then knitted three rows of garter stitch. Then added one row: k3, yo1 alternately to get the slightest ruffle. Then one more row of garter stitch and then cast off.

The ready scarf is about 17 x 100 cm. It is very warm and absolutely snug. It feels as if silky to the body and looks smart. I hope to wear it with pleasure. Besides, it will always be associated with my wonderful trip to Baturyn anyway:-)

Maple Leaves Pillow, or Autumn in the House

A couple of weeks ago I tried to arrange the clothes in my wardrobe to keep summer and winter items separately and to avoid the permanent threaten to have a broken hanger bar. I know some good girls do it regularly but I managed  it the first time. During the process I found a small pillow that had been bought long ago but forgotten up to the right moment. That moment came today in the morning when I decided it is the time to sew a pillow case  for that cushion using the crocheted maple leaves.

The pillow about 39x39 cm, remnants of thin coat fabric, a zipper (it is better to have as long as the width of the pillow but I only a had shorter one to match so used it) and the motifs for the decor, in fact, they will be applique.
Cut two squares 40х40 cm + seam allowance (double folded fabric). On one of the squares, which is supposed to be the front, mark the centre of the pillow case to control the arrangement of the motifs.

Next step is to arrange the motifs. They can be either basted to the pillow or pinned if the details' textures are not smooth. I started with the bigger leaf, pinned it then stitched Then did the same with the smaller one.

Then I took a break because it became obvious that the picture need some bright spot to be enlivened. So I crocheted five yellow puffy flowers and added them to the composition. The flowers are stitched along the green circle and thus create 3-D effect.

Now it's time time to sew the zipper.

The last step is to join the both parts of the pillow case. Before stitching don't forget to leave the zipper open to turn out the item.

That's the way how autumn looks in the house :-)

Crocheted Puffy Flowers

In addition to the Maple Leaves I've crocheted  few Puff Flowers today because, while sewing the pillow case, I felt the lack of some bright spot on its decor. So after looking through my long ago queued projects on Ravelry I chose these Puffy Daisies. In fact, the flowers are made with a puff stitch that creates such a nice volume. But my flowers are not so puffy as for my yarn the hook was too small and  it was troubling to make more yokes for the petals without harming the thread. On the other hand, I didn't want to have too big daisies not to let them dominate on the pillow. So they are a little more modest than in the pattern

Fairisle Cowl, or Travelling Arrows I

Almost any story can be told either long or quick. I seem to be pretty skillful in both ways of telling:-) This story meant to start in March after my knitting the  Downtown Hat. But it was spring, the hat turned to be too warm for that time of the season so none of new scarves were planned to be made. However, the idea stayed alive and its time came when I registered to travel to the north-east of Ukraine where the weather is supposed mucj colder in October comparing with my locality. So I bought a skein of yellow RAM Angora Yarn to combine with the remnants of the blue from the hat's and among tons of patterns chose this one, Arrow Circle Scarf, to make a cowl right to the trip. I thought the pattern with its numberless arrows pointing destinations matched the general idea of travelling.  Besides, it required only two colours so the work didn't promise to be too troubling.

The knitting started last Sunday. For the provisional cast-on I used this method . But the stitches from the chain I cast of with a hook, too.

The pattern is for a scarf but I decided to knit around as soon as I imagined how annoying it would be to see those strands of the treads when wearing the scarf which, no doubt, won't fit around the neck as it looks on the photo.
From the afternoon up to the evening I knitted about two or three cm and during the week before the trip found the time to knit one repeat of the pattern. So after easy counting it became clear that the cowl would be ready about next spring :-) In this way the cowl transferred into a trip project.

I tried to go on knitting in the train while going to Kyiv. But there was pretty dark inside so I could add only few rows of the next repeat. After train it was a bus trip, and while me and my friend were going to Kozelets, a small town with a splendid cathedral, that impressed with its architecture and unique carved from wood iconostasis of 27 meters height, most of time I was napping.

The journey from Kozelets to Kochubey's House was a little longer so I added few more rows to my cowl. While listening to the stories of the house, watching the pictures and the museum's exhibits and then walking around the beautiful autumn park, I forgot about the knitting at all and only felt as if filling with joy inspiration and dreams. Maybe because all the surroundings provoked the lyrical mood, my thoughts were mostly thronging on Mazepa and Motrya's love although it was not the only thing we heard in that place.

The way to Baturyn fortress was very short so the knitting was postponed till ... indefinite time:-)
I shared my impressions for the last two days so much that it hard to find new words so I only can quote myself :-) Trips can be different: in some of them you can enjoy the landscapes, architecture, cuisine, being lazy and relaxed but after some trips you feel as if after reading some very important book. The one that changes your outlook and consciousness... as if you found something missed in the puzzle that you couldn't make the whole life. I was sure that I am as much Ukrainian as it could be but there I saw the people who really made so colossal work to restore and make our past alive that can't but admire them. Baturyn is revived from the ash national treasure and it must be a cult sight for every Ukrainian, the outcome of the scientists and donators' work is worth it indeed.

After visiting the Rosumovsky Palace and while coming back to Kyiv my knitting got the half of the second repeat. On getting home, I knitted a little more and now already have two repeats. Not bad indeed... if forgot that I need eight generally :-) So I hope the arrows will show many destinations ahead to become a cowl, finally.
