About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Beaded Donut Bead, or When the Shape Matters

Last few weeks made me feel as if all my creativity and desires are exhausted. I don't remember if regular teleportation from holidays to work causes the same state every year but this time it had some crucial influence indeed. Hundreds of watched videos and printed projects of all the ever interesting for me needlework left me indifferent until I came across the photo of Incased Donut by Glenda Payseno.
And suddenly I remembered that when choosing the beads for this necklace last year I bought 5 donut beads. The light in the store was not too good for selling beads so I expected the donuts to be terracotta but on bringing them home I saw they were red and matched that project in no way. So the beads were buried in the bottom of one of my stash boxes. But as red plays magically always, last night I found the beads, matched оther materials and at once made my own net to bead the first donut bead. I haven't decided yet how will use the new beads but I am just glad I still love my needlework and have new ideas again.

Glenda Payseno.

How to is here, in a short video /

In the video I used the word "doughnut" instead of "donut", I don't think it is a beading crime and hope you don't either:-)

Dried Rose Petals Earrings

After writing the title for the post it crossed my mind that I even hadn't think about the name for the project and just used the name of the beads from which it is made... Either I am tired or crazy... or both together:-)
The shape of the fringe part of the earrings remind me the way people save tobacco. The gathered in bunches leaves as if string on wood boards and hang around to dry. And then they look as leaf garlands that decorate the abodes marking the end of the harvest time. As I only saw that in reality in Azerbaijan, the earrings turned out to be the obvious continuation of my East Trace theme:-)

Beautiful and intricate pattern Yafa Petal Earrings by Penny Dixon design is from Beadwork 08/09 2013 magazine. The sizes of my materials are almost the same but instead of 11/0 I used 10/0 seed beads and my 15/0 of one colour. I chose red rose petals beads and this 91240 colour seemed to be a little disappointing but when the earrings were ready, the petals got  delicate transparent and glowing look and thus combined very well with the bicones and firepolished beads.
The bezel part seemed to be a little fragile comparing with the fringe so I reinforced it with extra weaving.

I liked both the process of beading the earrings and the result and surely I will be wearing them with pleasure.

Georgina Colour Buttoned Dress

Talks about suiting and non-suiting colours confuse me sometimes a lot.  I agree that colours should match each other in the same outfit and overall but as for the certain palette every person must follow, I have doubts... To wear the same colours every day is boring and the simplest way to embellish everyday routine with diversity is to choose different colours for clothes. I like bright ones and I know either it is red or blue or purple - they suit me but if to read various bits of advice about my choice, they can in no way. And the proverb about different tastes doesn't work here because not to argue about tastes, the taste must be cultivated at first.
I believe the colour preference is like the preference of aromas or music - if it is in harmony with our state of mind, inner world and the present mood, it makes us feel comfortable and so can't but suit. When something changes inside us, our preferences change as well.
The colour of my new dress just called me... don't know why. It seemed to be ideal at the moment of choice and as soon as I decided to sew this pattern in this colour, I wasn't going to refuse my idea... Or maybe it is just a kind of obstinacy: either this one or none at all. Or maybe I've had no purple summer dress up to now so found it would be great :-)
Who knows, the result is here and that is all:-)

The main problem for me with this pattern #105 from Burda 6/2016 was to decide on what side of the sateen stretch, wrong (matte) or right (shining), cut the dress. That is all what bothered me while preparing to sew... I am a pretty confident person especially when it goes about cutting fabric:-)) But this time the development of the dilemma became funny indeed: thinking over the sewing in the morning I was inclined to make the shining side right but in the afternoon changed the opinion on the opposite... At last I got worn of that, stopped hesitating and started the work. The wrong side became right.

The change in the cutting concerns the front placket. I made it without interfacing but cut it in different way from the magazine's. From my previous posts it is known I prefer a single piece plackets but here it was not possible to make because of few front reliefs. So I drew three widths of the placket (3 cm x 3= 9 cm ) and added the seam allowances for the short sides and only for one long side. In this way one of the layers plays a part of interfacing but the placket saves its pliability and it almost doesn't gather in the seams when being sewed to the front.
After the cutting bend the edge without seam allowance twice and press.

Then put the right side of the placket to the wrong side of the front and stitch along the centre. Then stitch the short sides. Bend the placket on the front and stitch it to the front.

The zest of the dress is its belt. Here I made it with the seam on the centre.

As my buckles' width is only 4 cm instead of 5, the belt is 4 cm width, too. And I top stitched it along the edges and twice more  instead of triple.
I also recommend to cut the corners of the front short sides of the belt because in this way after sewing the edges will look neat and won't be seen.

Despite pretty complex pattern the dress is worthy sewing. It has quite tight fitting but made from stretching material is comfortable enough. The dress is embellished with the beaded buttons. Almost all the seams of the dress are double top stitched.
I didn't make any jewelry for the dress purposely. I have the idea so maybe realise it later, besides, these earrings matched very well.

Ukrainian Ornament

There was no aim to make the earrings reminding our national decoration. The plan was to make something matching the bracelets in colours. But while playing with the seed beads, I recognized that those diamond shape elements, in fact, form vyshivanka's (Ukrainian embroidered national shirt/blouse) ornaments and along with the chosen colours are consonant with my father's and my early years' shirts' embellishment. The work of consciousness is very mysterious:-)

Having enough 6/0 seed beads it was natural to find the pattern to use them although they are not so popular for making such kind of jewellry. This pair of earrings  from +offthebeadedpath draw my attention as soon as I saw it and its time came:-) The only problem was to choose the set of colours and their alternating in the item. To take the decision I made four variants of the elements, then chose two of them and only after making almost full earrings of the kinds understood what I wanted:-)
To add the earring hooks I made loops of six seed beads.

I agree with the designer who considers the element can be used to make a nice pendant. I also think if to make a lot of such elements and join them, a pretty refined bracelet can be got  as well. May be I'll make it some day:-)

Magatama Bracelet (Updating)

The updating here means making one more magatama bracelet but using  the beads of other colour style.

All the rest was made exactly like I did here in the second variant for six 6/0 seed beads.

This bracelet looks very nice, too, but different. Probably because blue with silver beads visually create the effect of airiness and weightlessness.
I am going to wear the bracelets together and expect them to be a good accessory for some of my future sewing projects.
