About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Polka Dots Blouse, or Misterious Play

The other days I unexpectedly got two free tickets to so called mono-theatre. Such a theatre means that only one actor is on the stage and he/she must be professional and talented enough not to make you leave the hall before the play finishes. Obviously it was not a formal visit to classic academic theatre, besides, it is yet summer and very hot here. So I just used the occasion to make a new simple and quick project.
As the tickets were presented by my cousin who is not interested in theatre at all, the name of the play remained a mystery for me and my friend until our arrival to the performance.

The blouse #105 from Burda 2/2016. The nice issue, by the way, I've already made three items from it (Dress #112,  Blouse #108) and am planning not less than two more. The money are not wasted:-)

I feel my story will go on longer than the sewing of the blouse:-) And it only confirms that it is really quick sewing. Besides, you shouldn't think about the apparel's fitting at all. The only problem concerning fitting - the blouse is very loose (ideal for hot weather!) and it can waggle on the shoulders and untuck from the skirt or pants so choose the longer variant to avoid the latter to some degree.

And a couple of sewing notes. Firstly, I omitted the slit on the back as the only function of it is to make the sewing complex and the blouse has enough big neck hole to put it on.
Secondly, I top stitched the yoke, arm hole seams and the neck hole as well.

The short sleeve turned out to be long anyway for me. So I cut all the sleeve's hem seam allowance (in my case it was 5 cm instead of the magazine's 9 cm) and then rolled  4 cm from a new edge. (On the photo the initial length).

If the fabric is natural and not as smooth as silk, when processing the hems, you can at first press the seam allowance for 0/5 - 0.7 cm instead of basting. And then draw the final line of the hemming from the fold and then baste (or press) and stitch the seam allowance.

And the turned up cuff.  If to make it too wide and even to sew it to the sleeve with slip stitch (as recommended in the instruction) but your fabric is pretty heavy, it will not "stick" to its spot. So for me the better idea is to make the cuff narrower (mine is about 3.5 cm) and I always sew it to the sleeve (as here, or pants if they have it) seam in seam. It can be good support for slip stitches:-)

That's all: few hours and the outfit is ready. The necklace and the earrings are great pair for the blouse:-) On the photo the blouse is combined with  skirt #105 from Burda 02/2014 made two years ago.
P.S. And what about the play? It turned out to be Gentle Creature by F.M. Dostoyevsky so not let me fall in depression after the performed session of psychoanalysis, my outfit was quite helpful with its cheerfulness :-)

The look from the real life during a trip :-)

Hexagon Peyote Pendant

The sea story is going on and today it is represented with the Hexagon Pendant that makes up a set with the earrings from the previous post.
Funny thing with my bead weaving happens. My favourite kind of jewelry to wear is earrings but after starting this hobby it became clear that necklaces are main consumers of my creativity:-) And, of course, if the necklace catches the eye a lot, the earrings should be less remarkable and more modest in shapes and sizes. So this time I yet started with the earrings and my idea was to make the pendant more delicate and simpler to balance the set. I guess I managed.

To make a pendant I used my first biggest hexagon from the previous project and made one more the smallest exactly like the one for the earrings. Then sewed them together only by the middle seed beads (as you see on the photo). As at once I decided to use a simple cotton lace as a rope for the pendant, the last joining stitches were made after the rope was added.

To embellish the pendant and give it some some extra sparkling, I added two big crystal beads.
And as the rope is long enough, this time I omitted any clasp at all, just tied the ends of the rope.

It's hard to express how much the sea inspires:-))

Red Skirt, or Tomato Season:-)

How to look hot if you mostly look sweaty at this time of year?...:-) Very simple: just make and wear something red and a lot of fails in your appearance will be indulged. Even when looking at your reflection in this outfit in the mirror you remind  yourself a tomato or a chili pepper or both of them together:-)
I had some doubts as for the fabric brightness but then decided to stop hesitating and make what I wanted. The result is nice anyway and the question if I wear the skirt somewhen else except for these pictures, now is not important at all.

Well, the skirt #115 from Burda 2/2016 is my forth item from this issue, the previous one was the Polka Dots Blouse that combines ideally with the skirt. For the sewing I chose sateen stretch for the model but as it is very dense and pretty thick for  summer clothes, had to omit the belt. I liked the detail very much and even cut it but then thought  I hardly would ever wear it so the belt went to leftovers.

During the sewing the first moment I would pay attention to is the processing of the pocket, of course. I won't rewrite the instruction here and hope the pictures will be helpful if anybody is as confused with this detail as I was. Photo 2 represents the placement of the pocket before stitching and the final result - the ready detail (it will be step 7) looks the same.

Top stitching of the pocket edge is made in two steps: at first top stitch it from the side to the end of the flap not catching the side pocket bag.

The second step - go on top stitching from the flap to the waist and catch the side pocket bag.

As I omitted the belt and decided to button the skirt, I had to reinforce the top of the front facing with interfacing. Then sewed the facing to the waist edge.

All the inner edges of the front and waist facings and hem were top stitched.

I also sewed the loops into the sides to hang the skirt.

The final touch - making button holes ( two for the upper front and one for the inner front) and sewing the buttons.

Hexagon Peyote Earrings, or As Thick As Thieves :-)

Although I promised hold the course but turned aside for some time... just a little :-) so let's come back to the sea theme. On the simple reason that the memories about sea rest is still fresh and, fortunately, summer is not over so there is a chance to enjoy seascapes and sea voyages and to luxuriate on the sea waves and get some suntan (every time when buying the sun protection lotion, I think how much one should lie in the sun to use  it fully:-)) In summer at the seaside I always feel as if I am at some festival and am surrounded with inseparable in their eternity bright sun and blue sky and sea...

It turns out I am becoming a fan of open shapes and after making a square, diamond and drop, wanted to give a try to a hexagon. The idea for the earrings were found on one of the Pinterest boards.  Then gathered all the materials of blue and yellow colours which I have, finally stopped on cut beads and started combinating.

The first hexagon was made two big for my idea so I left it aside. The second try was better. The smallest hexagon made twice. First time started with blue and the second with yellow. The latter was better choice.

The ready earrings were too light and seemed to me to be unfinished. So I added a crystal as a dangle both to make them heavier and add some zest:-)

And in this way they look now. And sea topic is still actual:-)

Stripy Shirt, or Sightseeing Tour

Questions about dreams like the questions about romance always take me unawares... And if yet I can't avoid answering, the first what occurs to me is the health for my parents and then those very standard much discussed and parodied (let's remember MissCongeniality) wishes from different kinds of misses about the peace and the medicine from death diseases for all the mankind. Saying without any irony all that is perfect and very noble but everybody has own personal dreams and they are more definite. Probably I have few ones, too, but why it is so hard to talk about them I don't know. Once I even asked Google how to get rid of dreams. And if to generalize all what indifferent Google said, it was "never stop dreaming"... And he doesn't care indeed what is on my mind. So if even soulless Google is much cleverer than I in such questions, then let's muse and dream...

So, Dream, Baby, Dream :-)

The border between available dream and, let's say, unavailable is thin enough. Either it is worthy to define that border or not is person's choice only but for me, not to feel disappointed because of wasted efforts, the aims should be chosen in for an inch, in for a mile if it is possible to say so here. If you are an ordinary person without special chances like me, then let's do gradually from small to big and maybe one day we'll get the great:-)
So I dream mostly about travelling (and possible about love, too, but not this time:-)) And surprisingly I even got into the desired places a couple of times:-) For example, to Czechia ( Prague, Hluboka nad Vltavou, Cesky Krumlov, Karlovy Vary, Kutna Hora - links to my albums) two years ago or to Khotyn, one of the best preserved Ukrainian fortress, and Chernivtsi  this year.

Besides the above peroration, the mentioned destinations have one more common feature: both times I wore the same shorts - ideal clothes for the travelling and the best shorts I've ever sewed and worn. I made them purposely to visit Czechia by Culottes pattern from Burda 5/2014 with some modifications.

And as I had some fabric left, I thought if I were so lucky with my vacations having the shorts on, probably if to make a shirt, it would bring me some fortune, too.

Well, the model #108 from Burda 1/2009 was planned to be sewed long ago. The time came at last. I made it from the same stripy fabric, the blend of linen, cotton and viscose. I shortened the sleeve and it made the shirt good for not very hot but pleasant summer weather to wear.

I also made the single piece placket instead of the stitched.
The magnet on the picture is just to revive pleasant memories:-)

So the placket is made exactly like for this blouse. I prefer such plackets because its top stitching gathers the front edge of the detail is much less than its sewing as a separate detail. Besides, the placket stays more flexible because the role of the interfacing is played by an extra layer of the fabric.

As my shirt is from stripy fabric, when cutting the pockets and the flaps, check the stripes: they must check with the stripes on the main details. I do this just drawing them on the paper patterns.

Reinforce the pockets in full with interfacing.
Don't forget to make oblique stitch in the corners to have them neat after turning the details out.

Sew the pockets and flaps in this way.

In this way they look in the ready shirt.

I already told in this project how I sew the collar. All the work I made on the sewing machine. After the collar detail is ready at first I sew the inner part of the collar to the wrong side of the item and then roll the seam allowance and sew the outer part of the collar to the right side of the shirt.

The side slits and hem are processed in this way. Firstly when cutting the shirt I added seam allowance for the slit 4 cm (the same as for the hem). So before stitching it is necessary to mark the line and press the first rolling for about 0.5 - 0.7 сm. On the picture you can see it for the slit and for the hem do the same.

Then work the corners in the way  they do it for the table cloths.
The technique is pretty known so hope it is clear from the pictures.

Turn the corner out. The rest three corners are processed in the same way.
After that the hem and slits are ready for stitching.

The belt loops are easier to make in this way. Fold the edges of the detail to the centre, press. Then fold in a half, press. Top stitch along the both edges. Cut for three loops.

And my shortened sleeve with a false cuff. As the shirt is meant to be worn in summer and I was short of the fabric, I made the false cuff. Probably this technique is known for experienced tailors and I was taught it by my sewing teacher many years ago. So gladly share it here.
First of all you should to define the desired width of the cuff and to add it + 0.5 (0.7) cm for the seam to the length of your sleeve.

And not to overload the post with writing I made a short video how to work with such a sleeve.

The shirt is very universal and good for combination not only with my favourite shorts but with other things as well and can play a part of a light blazer. For example, it matches red trousers well. To complete the  look I added the necklace and the earrings made last year.

Sea Wheel Earrings, or Hold the Course:-)

Surely, hold the course, or why else the wheel is needed?:-) Everybody can interpret the order in own way and it works both figuratively and literally. The only condition to follow it - to choose the correct direction to move...
And as any outfit is supposed to be uncompleted without a pair of the corresponding earrings and I am entirely in sea topic now so won't postpone making an addition to my last necklace

The earrings were planned at once with the necklace so some beads were left aside to make them. To make such kind of earrings is the easiest way to feel yourself a designer because it took about 15 minutes to assemble them from any elements you like. No recipe no rights - just stringing in your own way.

Despite I do beading more than a year already I still strat any of my projects just with common conception and during work add, remove or alternate the components. For example, this time I added orange rondelles to the ready items to get delicate sparkling.

Knotted Necklace from the Sea Treasure Box

The only efforts one has to do while relaxing at the sea are to lie in the sun, turn regularly to the other side not to get sunburn of all the body at once and enjoy the sea swimming:-)  If suddenly you get tired of this process, then, of course, a slow walk along the beach can vary your being on the coast... Some people like to gather different pretty stones or seashells or whatever else during such strolls. I did liked doing that when being a child, too, but I can't remember at least one occasion when any of that collected stuff ever became in use and so all those things finished their existence into litter bins. However, now I easily can imagine that sea waves brought to the shore grinded and smoothed by the water pieces of glass. And if to gather them, string on the rope and add some fancy junk which is possible to find around as well, then you get this simple and nice necklace:-)

(The picture of the sea is from my Vodice album)

And here it is what I found along the shore:-) Glass beads of different sizes and shapes, p/a lace (about 3 m). And different thematic dangles.

The technique of making such a necklace or a bracelet is very quick and simple. To find the tutorial is easy if to surf  Knotted Necklace. For example, I liked this one
Before starting the work I arranged the beads in the desired order to match the colours and sizes. To string easier I also melted the ends of the rope and then joined the needles with threads to both of the ends.

Besides the project is simple, it is also is a good stash buster. After finishing the first stage of stringing and knotting I added the leftover crystals and dangles in free order to embellish the necklace. I guess in this way it corresponds my idea much better. The matching earrings are quick to make as well:-)
