About Me

My photo
My blog's main subjects are sewing, the thing in which I am experienced the most, and beadwork, which is, in fact, pushed me into blogging. I am also engaged in knitting and crocheting. All together they are the set of skills which I use to make my wardrobe my whole life. These are not my only interests, I also like the English language (that's one of the reasons that my blog is bilingual), try to travel around my country and abroad (when can afford it), am interested in art (to the degree of a dilettante but nevertheless) and adore the people who can create anything beautiful or useful whatever it is :-) So welcome to a needlecrafter diary!

Fun of Reusing

The post is devoted to a quick and simple project that takes not much time but gives wonderful result. Besides, it  is exactly what can be called a fun when it goes about beading. No rules  and no special techniques just beads, good taste and fantasy. And that what stringing is. :-)

So, let's start with beads. A new necklace is made from two old ones with adding some new beads. It is well-seen in the picture that the previous items were assembled with  beautiful elements. Nowadays they would be called by Preciosa and in old times we called them by Yablonex production. It maybe the same, though, and  I just didn't know that when was very young. :-)

All the beads from old necklaces can be used again except the pearls that look really very bad. For new project I selected black and transparent fire polished beads and added few black and white agate beads, crystals, pearls of two grey hues and black seed beads with silver inner tunnel.

Now string all the elements on the jewelry thread. I also used a clasp from one of the old necklaces as it still looks decently.
And one more notion: as the necklace seemed to be quite heavy to feel safe I used 3 crimps to fix the jewelry thread instead of one.

The new necklace is pretty long, about 180 сm,  and has univesal colour style so I hope to wear it often.

Carpathian Path Peyote Spiral

I started writing this short introduction to my new project few times and couldn't decide what is worth mentioning the most in it: either the beauty of  Ukraine or her diversity or that definite trip about Western Ukraine I made with my father or my wish to come back to see those places again. But all that together is very dear for me and deserves to be united in one single piece. And it is exactly what I tried to reflect in my new necklace.

The trip happened long ago, eight  or nine years ago, don't remember exactly. At those times I was as far from having a digital camera as the one I used was from being called a camera as well:-) I only have just a few pictures of bad quality from that journey and got used to think I have none at all. Fortunately, the value of the events is not estimated by the quality and number of the pictures but by the impressions and memories only. That's why I had no doubt as for the using one of those pictures for learning new technique - beading embroidery, namely beading a Cabochon. I  cut the oval from one of those photos to glue to the transparent cabochon for the further making the pendant.

There are many different tutorials how to make it so it is easy to find the one you like: all of them are pretty identical. For example, I liked +Beadaholique tutorials because all of them are gathered on one page on their site and you just use the video you need during the process of work.
The sense of such beading is to make the cabochon to stay in bezel and to give the bezel the right form you need two different kinds of seed beads. Mostly they mention 11.0 and 15.0. I had none so I used cylindrical seed beads (brown cuts) and 10.0 which is the most spread here.

So after gluing the cabochon, we bead it around with peyote stitch. At first I made three rows of brown seed beads, then two green and, as I felt some lack of sky in my picture, one row of blue.

And then I understood I want it more:-) So decided to make extra trim on my own idea. To make the same you need the number of the seed beads in the just trimmed row to be divided for 4.

But that was not enough, either so I invented one more row to embellish the element. Here it is the step one.

And here are the pictures of the second step. And then reinforcing: pull the thread through all the seed beads of the first and the second rows of this lace edge.

The second element of my necklace is a mini-Cellini spiral beaded by this tutorial. In summer I already made one but different beads created absolutely different look so this kind of rope can be varied again and again.

As a clasp I chose a toggle and joined the pendant to the spiral with seed beads stringing.

The necklace is beautiful indeed and I can be proud of the way I managed to embody my idea.

OKSAMYT OKSANA :-)

In Ukrainian velvet is "oksamyt" and obviously I couldn't keep myself from the temptation to use this wordplay for my new project's name :-) By the way, "velvet" in Ukrainian is English "curdoroy":-))
Velvet, together with different kinds of silk, is not the material desiring to become clothes. Probably, the producers have never told velvet that it is just textile and that any tailor is able to find the tricks to tame this fabric to transfer it in apparel anyway.
The chances to subdue velvet are pretty big. The main thing is to mind its features and repeat oneself as a refrain how luxurious the fabric is and how noble the new outfit will look when is ready. And forget about the nonsense doubts if  velvet is in fashion or not. It is classic material and classics is always timeless. The only reason to make choice whether to sew or not to sew is if the fabric pleases you or not. For instance, I like it.  I can't say I worked a lot with it but I certainly know the behaviour of its main kinds while being sewed.

The hatmittens and the earrings are this year projects as well as the pants.

ОКСАМИТ  ОКСАНA :-)

On my way of making my stash empty I came across a small piece of black velvet, that stored there not less than 20 years  so it is the right time to use its leftover.  There used to be a whole roll of it: in the 90s' crises our people sometimes got the salary with different goods instead of money and this velvet appeared in the house exactly in this way. I already sewed and worn a pair of trousers from it and about three or four years ago made a waistcoat so there  seemed to be enough remnants to make cropped pants or, as they are called, capris.  Although they are pretty comfy for summer, I don't like such kind of trousers very much: they shorten  legs visually so suit only long-legged tall women. In cold seasons they look much more ugly especially when wearing with shoes or boots. But I decided to pretend I knew nothing about that and if to wear them with high boots, my consciousness will stay clear.
I found long ago chosen pattern #109B from Burda 9/2002 and started working.

The first stumble moment with velvet is cutting. It is because of pile, or to be exact, its direction. I still don't know those rules; to define how to cut the fabric right - just hang the piece and see where it gives nice saturated colour, then draw few arrows on the wrong side along the length of the fabric and keep that direction while cutting.

Next stop to think is the width of the fabric. In old times they produced some textile very narrow. For example, my piece was just 68 cm wide. I am surely not the one who can cut trousers from this quantity of fabric. So we'll do the same what our grannies did: add some kind of  triangular insert to the back half of the pants. The technology allows us to do that so why not to use this trick to save fabric or to have the trousers fit.

Using the example of this insert, it is worthy and necessary to talk about sewing the fabric. The velvet pile makes the main problem here. And the higher the pile the more troublesome the sewing is because the layers of the fabric always try to displace from the seam line. To prevent that it is good both to baste the details with diagonal stitch and have seam allowances pinned while sewing on the machine.

And the most important part is ironing the velvet. I exactly know there is a special device for it. I don't know its English term and not going to look it up because I have never seen and used it in reality, only read in the manuals on Technology. I also once tried to use a towel as a cloth for ironing but it should be with high pile as well and very stiff otherwise you'll get pressed shining pile. So what I do. I use an ordinary clothes brush to put under right side of the fabric. It is not so quick to iron then but if you are not going to make costumes for crowd scenes of a historical saga, you have a plenty of time to have your outfit well-looking. The temperature depends on the kind of your velvet (cotton, silk or synthetic), steam it a little.

As my piece of velvet was really small I also had to shorten the length of the capris for 2 cm and made the facing for the processing the hem. I used some remnants of wool ( I guess it also will be nice to make it of different colour) for that.
Cutting the facing for the hem. Make the only detail  for two halves.

There is nothing special with this work. To make it easier at first sew the facing to the bottom, then the side seams of the pants and only then turn the facing out.  Sew the inner edge of the facing to the pants with a slip stitch, you are not obliged to make the stitch perfect because velvet is ideal fabric to cover any fails with it.

I also cut the band for the trousers from the same wool. It is sewed in my usual way: at first inner side, then outer side with top stitching. I already told about it a lot, e.g. here. My only notion as for this certain project. I made the band in full and then sewed a zipper to the pants as if it was the single piece. It is not very professional but it surely decreases the number of the fabric layers and іt is very good for such pants.
I recommend to sew loops in the band seam to hang the pants to avoid the further pile pressing on the folds of the fabric.

Sewing a zipper to the velvet is not enjoyment as well. The enjoyment is the final result with less trouble:-) Without long story I can say that you can sew zipper with hands. It will be quick and neat and thanking to the pile not very noticeable. Maybe modern sewing machine can do it themselves instead of a seamstress, mine is not so skillful:-)
I removed a zipper to the side seam, and applied a usual one for the pants not the invisible one. Just to provide my calm life without fear to fix the zipper in future or if I ever need, to make it quicker.
Besides, the upper part of the zipper was sewed from the wrong side because I couldn't make it stay still. The result is not bad. It would be even better if I sewed with black threads instead of dark dark khaki. But it was the strongest tread I had at that moment so I have no remorse about this.

A couple words about the waistcoat. Pattern #122 from Burda 9/2006. As I have no pictures of work on it, I only can say it turned out to be a good stash booster for the remnants of lining (it very often happens to my waistcoats) and to make it warmer all the lining was doubled with padding polyester.

In this way it looks all together with the mantel sewed two years ago by pattern #106A from Burda 11/2005.

Burda 11/2005.

Who is interested, in this way the mantel looked just sewed then.
The pattern of the hat you can find here and the cowl is here.

16 November 2015

From Pumpkin to Orange:-)

What a gloomy day is today... One of those when I think I will never see the sun again... Besides, it seems I've got a cold... So my magic skills are in great use right now. I wish I were able to disperse the clouds, stop the rain and calm the wind however to brighten this day to some degree is in my power entirely:-)
Shining seed beads and the most optimistic colour will be my great helpers in this deal. As for the latter, I mean sparkling orange.

Starting this project I had no certain idea about the result I wanted.  My only wish was to make orange beaded beads. And the possible aim was something like this nice bracelet. I even found the video tutorial for making such beads. But obviously they were not meant to be my real purpose and I didn't like the result of my first try: too much bulging around the bead's holes and none of alternation of decreasing could make me to go on.

So I decided to learn how to make the beaded bead in different way. I already made alike project Apple Blossom Earrings but used different technique for my beads. This time I followed this tutorial by our Ukrainian artist. I beaded 6 orange beads and the result was very pretty. It is not well-seen on the pictures but I used three kinds of different orange hues to get special sparkling.

Then I thought about orange pumpkins on the ground with fading green and brown leaves and how their stems weave like lianas and headed to the spiral tutorials. The best match for the idea turned out to be Spiral Tubular Herringbone, by the way in the same playlist you can find how to end such stitching neatly.

During assembling the necklace I used pretty unusual idea which occurred to me while I was watching this tutorial. Why not to use these filigree beads to make cups if they can be used as bezels?

Now all the elements are gathered. Time to assemble  and string. The only notion: the spiral is quite soft and draping so its smaller parts need some reinforcing with, e.g. plastic pipes, otherwise they won't keep the shape and will be waving.

And the crown of the work is earrings... really, what the necklace is without the earrings. To match such a necklace the earrings mustn't be too big or long, just sparkling:-) I had two variants but chose the second one.

And here it is, my new set. Hmm... at the end of the work instead of pumpkins I thought about oranges already... but it doesn't the matter. I guess I deserve one or even two now:-)
P.S.: After some time the necklace was unpicked and the materials were used for this one.

A Year of Beading. In the Search of a Red Flower.

Red is surely the colour I wear well and feel absolutely comfortable and confident when wearing it... I guess just because it matches my temper. So I keep to the opinion  that when choosing the colour style for any wardrobe, the factor of the personality is as important as the factors of appearance.

Being very inspired with my first beading project I started searching different beading sites and in one of them found this beautiful red flower. It turned out to be very quick and simple to find materials for making it: I took to pieces my old Czech set of a necklace and clips. No minute of regretting about that indeed: the set was mostly black, the colour I'm indifferent to, with few red beads which actually suited the idea of the flower perfectly.

The earrings were made first. Can't but say that they looked pretty without the drop bead as well but I wanted them longer so just couldn't stop:-)

And then - the necklace. The technology is the same: at first, drew the sketch on the paper and then assembled the beads. The black ones are from that ruined set, too.

And then the time to sew a New Year dress came. Beautiful pattern #111 from Burda 10/2014 was chosen (actually the issue was bought for the sake of this dress). I didn't take pictures of the process of sewing then but it was easy one-day-work sewing. My only notes: the sleeves are very narrow so the knits should be well-stretching but at the same time it mustn't be too thin otherwise the neck hole draping won't be well-shaped and relief.

That's the second story from my first beading experience... I feel it still inspires me :-)

8 November 2015

A Year of Beading. Almost Cherries

Looking through my G+ Beading album the other days  I saw its first project dated November 8 and it means that today my new hobby has a modest anniversary:-) At that time a year ago I had pretty vague intentions as for blogging but was clever enough to save pictures telling about making a couple of my first beading projects. I'm proud with me not giving up yet so think they deserve to get  separate posts.
And here it is the first of them, reminding ripe cherries with its beads' colour and shape.

My mum still  considers it to be my best project. Fortunately, sometimes she forgets about this and praises my other jewellry as well:-)
My first used materials: the remnants of thin yarn, plastic beads from an old bracelet, glass beads and some findings. I must admit this project cost me then about 12 hryvnias (about half a dollar now) without work, of course,.. I guess it was pretty stimulating to go on:-)
The main part - to crochet beads. Form my further experience I can say it is better  to choose for the base beads the ones of the same colour with your yarn. I don't remember the exact tutorial I followed but all of them are the same. I can recommend this one. Then after finishing your crochet string all the components on the jewellry thread.

Of course, such a necklace has no sense to wear without matching earrings:-)

The set matched few things in my wardrobe. Besides, the result inspired me a lot to develop the new skill.
